It’s glorious grapefruit season right now! I have been eating them until my tongue hurts and inevitably juice runs down my chin. We’ve added the zest to drinks, had ’em in salads, but I still like them best as a breakfast or snack just as they are.
If you’re looking for a really simple way to take a standard grapefruit breakfast and turn it into a spectacular, hot sticky brunch treat, try this broiling method. You can use any kind of sugar or syrup and add some herbs if you’re feeling fancy. I had something similar at a restaurant with thyme leaves sprinkled on top and it was lovely.

Another quick lunch idea I thought I’d share. This is a cold salad on top of warm toast (well naan bread in my case, but use what you have on hand). With the cold weather, I’ve been pretty uninterested in eating anything cold lately, but this had a warm enough overall vibe to be appealing even on a dreary, rainy winter day. Avocados and grapefruit have both been on mega sale lately so I have quite a few hanging around. The avocados are perfectly ripe and I am feeling pressure to eat them before they go off. So today I thought I’d make an extra fancy avocado toast by combining tangy grapefruit and creamy, savory white beans with the avocado.

These are a great meal to make when you have leftover roti and raita. They may seem like a lot of work at first, but if you get into the habit of cooking this way it is quick and very inexpensive. When I was a vegetarian I ate meals like this all the time. The filling comes together in minutes and the potatoes and greens could easily be substituted for anything you have in your crisper waiting to get eaten! Potatoes and greens are great because they are pretty neutral and take on the flavor of the spices well. Leftover Chana Masala is also great rolled up in a roti.

My partner, Dan has told me on many separate occasions how good these carrots that they serve at work are. (Yes, Dan is given lunch at work, his life is great). They are basically just carrots, soaked in butter and ginger. But Dan eats them every chance he can get.
