Poutine isn’t an everyday meal, but it’s a favorite. Since I don’t like deep-frying at home, I bake the fries; they still get crispy without the fuss of frying. Montreal-style poutine is made with vegetable gravy, as in this recipe, but you can also make your favorite beef or turkey gravy. Of course, proper poutine uses cheese curds, and if you can find them do use those, but fresh mozzarella works for me. It has the same spongy quality, just maybe with a little less squeak. This recipe does come out a little more expensive than you would think because of the fresh mozzarella. If you use less or skip the cheese entirely, you can cut the price in half.

January makes me want to eat soup. Actually even more than eating soup it makes me want to make soup. This curried sweet potato soup is from my first cookbook, From Scratch. It’s super hearty and satisfying, and the thick texture makes it feel like it’s really sticking to your ribs! But since January is, for so many, a time to focus on eating more vegetables and generally taking care of our health, this soup also fits the health bill. It’s basically a pot of puréed vegetables, but you will feel a lot more full (and warm!) than if you just drank a bunch of green juice.

Another classic from the archives while I’m away for the holidays. This Cauliflower soup is also from my first cookbook, From Scratch. I put it in with my middle sister, Emily, in mind and it totally worked, she makes it all the time (or so she claims!). It’s right for her because she is always trying to eat more vegetables, but they are not her favorite thing. This soup is almost pure vegetables, but it’s also creamy and warm and satisfying and a little spicy and cheesy; just right for the reluctant vegetable eater.

This is a recipe from my first cookbook, From Scratch, and I still crave it in the winter. It’s creamy, spicy and delightfully different from your standard bowl of chili. Cauliflower and white beans make up the bulk of it and they both soak up a ton of great flavor. My friends used to beg me to make this, vegetarian or not. However, if the idea of veggie chili doesn’t sound so hot to you, you could try it with chicken or pork. Keep reading
